Recruiter vs. Reality
What they tell you

Patriot, THAAD, Avenger — you'll be the technical expert behind the Army's most sophisticated air defense systems, protecting forces from aerial and missile threats with technology most soldiers never get near.

What it's actually like

Air Defense Artillery is perpetually the branch that everyone forgets exists until a drone or ballistic missile becomes a front-page problem, at which point suddenly you're the most important person in the theater. As a 140E you are the systems expert that the ADA officers lean on heavily because the equipment is complex enough that a six-month officer rotation doesn't build real expertise. Patriot system maintenance and troubleshooting is genuinely technical work — radar systems, missile guidance, launcher integration — and you'll know it cold by CW3. The downside is that ADA posts are geographically specific, which means your PCS options are limited and your family will become experts on a small number of Army installations. The branch is small enough that everybody knows everybody, which cuts both ways. Contractor money after 20 is good if you stay current on the systems.
