Dyess AFB in Abilene, Texas is home to B-1Bs and C-130s in a West Texas city that has more churches per capita than restaurants and more opinions about high school football than the entire state of Ohio. The B-1 'Bone' is one of the most impressive aircraft in the inventory and makes a sound at full afterburner that rearranges your internal organs in a way that feels patriotic. The mission is real, the steaks are massive (this is West Texas, where a 16oz is considered a starter), and the nearest 'interesting' city is a solid 3-hour drive in any direction — Dallas, Austin, San Antonio — take your pick, they're all equidistant and equally unreachable on a Tuesday. The Dyess community is famously tight-knit because there's literally nowhere else to go, which turns every squadron cookout into a genuine social event and every PCS departure into a funeral. Friday night high school football is the cultural event of the week, the wind carries tumbleweeds and broken dreams in equal measure, and the sunsets over the mesquite are admittedly gorgeous in that 'West Texas apocalypse aesthetic' way. Abilene tries hard. The people are genuine. The Chicken Express drive-through line at 1700 is the real formation.
