Grand Forks AFB

Air ForceND, US
Global Hawks and Existential North Dakota

Grand Forks AFB is where the Air Force flies RQ-4 Global Hawks — unmanned reconnaissance aircraft that can fly at 60,000 feet for 30+ hours — from a base that itself feels like it's under remote surveillance by winter, because winter in North Dakota doesn't approach, it occupies. UND adds some college-town energy to an otherwise flat, frozen existence: hockey games (the Sioux... er, Fighting Hawks are legit), college bars that welcome military, and the brief illusion that you're living somewhere normal. The Red River floods periodically as if North Dakota needed more character-building exercises beyond the -30°F wind chills, and the base has literally been underwater in living memory. The aurora borealis is your free entertainment — it's genuinely spectacular this far north, and you'll watch it from a parking lot with the same reverence other people reserve for fireworks shows. The phrase 'at least it's not Minot' is tattooed on every Grand Forks Airman's soul, spoken like a prayer, a mantra, and a coping mechanism all at once. The cost of living is so low you'll build actual wealth. The cultural scene is 'we have Applebee's and opinions about hot dish.' The people are Minnesota-nice with a North Dakota accent.
