MCAS Cherry Point

Where Marine Aviation Goes to Be Forgotten

MCAS Cherry Point is the Corps' East Coast aviation depot, strategically located in Havelock, North Carolina — a town whose Wikipedia page is shorter than most MRE ingredient lists and whose economy runs on haircuts, vape juice, and cautious optimism. Cherry Point is the second largest Marine Corps air station and the only master jet base on the East Coast, which sounds impressive until you realize that means they put all the jet noise in one place and that place is surrounded by swamp. The Outer Banks are close enough to dream about and far enough to require a liberty request, a full tank of gas, and the kind of optimism that only a first-term Marine possesses. New Bern is the 'exciting' nearby city — it has Tryon Palace and a bear statue, and if that doesn't concern you, nothing will. The humidity has achieved sentience and has filed for dependent status. The Neuse River is right there being beautiful while you're stuck on the flight line. But the aviation Marines here are legit — Harrier and F-35 squadrons doing real work, and the depot maintenance side keeps the entire Corps' aircraft flying. Nobody will ever make a movie about Cherry Point, and that's the most Cherry Point thing possible.
