MCB Hawaii (Kaneohe Bay)

MarinesHI, US
The One Duty Station That Ruins Every Other One

MCB Hawaii at Kaneohe Bay is so beautiful it should be illegal to PCS Marines here because nothing will ever compare and the Marine Corps knows it. The Koolau Mountains look AI-generated, the bay is absurd, and the shave ice alone has convinced more Marines to reenlist than any retention NCO in history. Your COLA helps — it does not save you. Hawaii cost of living will humble you in ways combat never could. A one-bedroom in Kailua costs more than your monthly take-home, and you'll pay it with a smile because you just hiked the Pillbox Trail at sunrise and saw something that made you briefly believe in God. The PT scenery is unfair — Marines from Lejeune and Pendleton will never forgive you for running along the beach while they run past a Waffle House. Plate lunches are a food group. Spam musubi is a lifestyle. The North Shore has waves that will kill you and you'll thank them for the opportunity. Every single Marine who PCSes from K-Bay becomes an insufferable person who starts sentences with 'When I was in Hawaii...' for the rest of their career, ruining every conversation at every duty station forever. You've been warned.

HousingOn-base housing available in several neighborhoods on Kaneohe Bay — ocean views are a real perk. Off-base in Kailua is beautiful but expensive — $2,800-$4,000 for a 3BR. Kaneohe is slightly cheaper. BAH is high but still does not fully cover Kailua rents.
SchoolsNo DoDEA schools. Hawaii DOE schools vary. Kailua and Kaneohe schools are generally decent. Punahou and Iolani are prestigious private schools (expensive). Many military families are satisfied with local public schools on the windward side.
MedicalBranch Health Clinic on base. Tripler Army Medical Center (20 min via H-3) is the major military hospital for all services in Hawaii — full-service with most specialties. Civilian options on Oahu are solid.
Spouse EmploymentHawaii job market is dominated by tourism, military, and government. Professional jobs exist in Honolulu but competition is high. Remote work is increasingly the best option. Cost of living makes single-income families very tight.
Commute / GatesMain gate off H-3 or Mokapu Blvd. H-3 through the Ko'olau mountains is one of the most scenic commutes in the military. Traffic from Honolulu side can be rough during rush hour. Kailua and Kaneohe commutes are 10-15 min.
Local AreaKailua is arguably the best military town in the entire DoD — a walkable beach town with boutique shops, excellent restaurants, and postcard-perfect beaches. Kaneohe is more local and affordable. The windward side of Oahu feels like a different world from Waikiki. Island fever is real — after a year, some people feel trapped. But others never want to leave.
RecreationKailua Beach and Lanikai Beach — consistently ranked among the best in the world · Kaneohe Bay for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding · Ko'olau Range hiking (Stairway to Heaven nearby) · North Shore surfing 45 min · Pearl Harbor and cultural sites · MWR beach cottages on Bellows
