Naval Air Station Patuxent River: the place where the Navy tests its coolest aircraft — F/A-18s, F-35Cs, E-2D Hawkeyes, next-gen drones, things that haven't been announced yet — and stations them in the part of Southern Maryland that time forgot, the GPS occasionally questions, and civilization has decided to give a polite berth. NAVAIR (Naval Air Systems Command) headquarters is here, which means the base has more engineers per square foot than most universities, and the test pilots walking around have the swagger of people who literally push aircraft to their breaking points for a living. The U.S. Naval Test Pilot School is here — one of the most selective flight programs in the world — and its graduates carry a quiet confidence earned one test card at a time. If you're a test pilot, this is Valhalla. If you're anyone else, this is a very long shore duty tour with a lot of deer, a Walmart, a Taco Bell that closes too early, and an existential sense that civilization is just out of reach. Southern Maryland has Chesapeake Bay waterfront charm (blue crabs, gorgeous sunsets, rockfish fishing), but the nearest city is a drive. DC is 'only an hour away' in the same way the moon is 'only three days away' — Route 4 to the Beltway is a commitment, not a commute, and it's lined with nothing but trees, gas stations, and your fading will to drive.
