Point Mugu and Port Hueneme: two bases smashed together on the Southern California coast where the Seabees convince themselves that 'Can Do' is a personality trait and not a desperate cry for help, and the weapons testing community fires things into the Pacific that nobody's allowed to talk about at the Oxnard Taco Tuesday. The base is wedged between Oxnard (affordable, diverse, excellent Mexican food from families who've been making it for generations) and Malibu (unaffordable, famous, and visible from the beach like a real estate hallucination) — being seated between economy and first class where you can see the nice stuff but you can't afford to touch it. The Channel Islands are offshore and gorgeous — kayaking through sea caves, watching dolphins from the bow, and pretending you're on vacation when you're actually just living here. The SoCal weather is 72 and sunny approximately 340 days a year, which makes every email from your buddy at Great Lakes feel like receiving a postcard from purgatory. The Seabee heritage is thick: Port Hueneme is the only West Coast Seabee homeport, and the 'We Build, We Fight' motto is tattooed on the community's identity (and sometimes literally on their forearms). Your Chief is probably in a better mood than they'd be in Norfolk, and the fish tacos alone justify your reenlistment.
