Nellis is the Air Force's combat Disneyland sitting on the edge of actual Las Vegas, which is exactly as dangerous as it sounds for an E-4 with a fresh paycheck and zero financial literacy. Red Flag is the Super Bowl of pretending to shoot things — the world's most advanced air combat exercise, where allied nations bring their best jets to the Nevada Test and Training Range and spend two weeks in the most intense simulated warfare on Earth. Weapons School graduates will let you know they went to Weapons School within 30 seconds of meeting them, and the patch is displayed with a reverence that borders on religious. The Thunderbirds are based here too, which means air show practice is just a Tuesday thing that you stop looking up for by month three. The summer heat hits 120°F and your car's steering wheel becomes a branding iron — you will buy a windshield sunshade and treat it like a survival tool because it is. Vegas is right there, which means your per diem, your paycheck, and your dignity are all in more danger than they've ever been. The Strip has a way of making an E-3's bank account disappear faster than a stealth fighter. Your rent is higher than you expected. Your credit card statement is higher than you feared. But the flying is the best in the world and the mission is unmatched.
