Where the Navy Does Paperwork Near the Birthplace of Rock and Roll

NSA Mid-South in Millington, Tennessee is where the Navy's personnel machine lives — Navy Personnel Command, the Bureau of Naval Personnel, the people who write your orders — which means this is literally where your career fate is decided, and yes, it's exactly as depressing as you'd expect the origin of bad news to be, located in a suburb of Memphis that has the energy of a DMV with a naval base attached. You're close enough to Memphis to get legendary barbecue (Central BBQ, Rendezvous, Cozy Corner — the holy trinity that'll make you understand why people argue about dry rub vs. wet) and hear live blues on Beale Street that'll rearrange your soul on a Saturday night. Sun Studio, Graceland, and the National Civil Rights Museum are all right there, making Memphis one of the most culturally significant cities you've never thought about visiting — until the Navy sent you here and you accidentally became a regular at a juke joint. The cost of living is almost comically low: houses with yards, garages, and porches for what a Norfolk apartment costs. The pulled pork is transcendent. The catfish is divine. The hot chicken from Gus's will make you question your pain tolerance and your life decisions, in that order. The irony of processing paperwork that ruins other people's lives while eating the best BBQ of yours is not lost on anyone stationed here.
