Vandenberg Space Force Base on California's Central Coast launches rockets into polar orbit — the only base in the continental U.S. that can launch south over the Pacific without overflying populated areas — and you can watch from the beach like it's a fireworks show that costs $300 million. SpaceX, ULA, and government launches light up the sky regularly, and the sonic booms of returning boosters shake windows with a frequency that the locals have learned to either love or tolerate. The surrounding wine country (Santa Ynez, Lompoc, Los Olivos — the Sideways movie region) keeps things classy. Santa Barbara is an hour south being unattainably beautiful, and SLO (San Luis Obispo) is an hour north being charming and affordable-adjacent. The coastal fog is persistent — 'June Gloom' extends from May to August — and the Space Force branding is still new enough that everyone asks if you're joking when you say where you work. The launch schedule is the best perk on any base in the DoD: you'll watch rockets leave Earth from your driveway and think 'yeah, this is better than a commissary discount.'
