Recruiter vs. Reality
What they tell you

Scout Sniper is one of the most demanding and respected specialties in the Marine Corps. You'll engage targets at ranges that infantry can't reach, provide reconnaissance that shapes the platoon and company fight, and operate with a degree of independence that most MOSs never see. The Scout Sniper Basic Course is among the hardest schools in the military — the stalking phase alone eliminates most candidates.

What it's actually like

The selection process before you even get to the Scout Sniper Basic Course is significant, and the Basic Course itself has attrition that reflects what the community demands. If you make it, you operate in two-man teams in environments where detection means mission failure — and you carry a rifle that weighs twenty pounds, plus a spotting scope, plus everything else a Marine already humps. The work in garrison involves constant training: marksmanship, stalking, surveillance, and the map reading and reporting skills that make a sniper actually useful beyond just hitting targets. Civilian law enforcement sniper positions and defense contractor precision marksmanship training programs recruit from this background. The discipline and the patience are skills that transfer more broadly than most people expect.
