Coordinates and controls the arrival and departure of personnel and equipment at landing beaches, helicopter landing zones, and inland movement control points during amphibious operations.
“You'll be the Marine who controls the chaos of an amphibious landing — sorting equipment, directing vehicles, and managing the flow of personnel and supplies from ship to shore under conditions that are inherently unorganized. Shore party operations are fundamental to what makes the Marine Corps different from any other ground force. The logistics coordination and movement control skills transfer directly to commercial port operations and transportation management.”
Amphibious landings in training are complicated; amphibious landings under fire are a different category of complicated entirely. Your job is to impose order on a beach where tracked vehicles, wheeled vehicles, helicopters, and approximately one thousand Marines all need to be moving in different directions at the same time. The landing support specialty involves both physical work and genuine logistics planning under time pressure. In garrison, the MEU workup cycle and amphibious exercise schedule give you real scenarios to develop the skills. The civilian logistics and port operations career path is realistic — maritime logistics coordinators and port operations managers have directly analogous roles.
