Recruiter vs. Reality
What they tell you

You'll conduct cyber operations — offensive and defensive — in support of Marine and joint force missions. Cyber warfare operators work in one of the most forward-deployed parts of the Marine Corps mission in a domain that is reshaping how military forces compete. The skills, the clearance, and the operational experience create a post-military profile that NSA, Cyber Command contractors, and commercial security companies hire aggressively.

What it's actually like

The 0689 community is small, the training pipeline is demanding, and the work is genuinely complex — operating in a domain where the adversary is adaptive and the tools change continuously. You'll work alongside NSA and USCYBERCOM elements, which means the caliber of the people around you is high and the bar for performance reflects that. Deployments are different from conventional Marine deployments — you may be in a server room in an undisclosed location doing things you will never be able to fully explain. The post-military transition is exceptional: cleared cyber operators with offensive and defensive experience can command compensation that reflects what those skills are actually worth in the private sector. The challenge is translating the classified work into a resume that conveys the depth without violating what you can't say.
