About This Program

WVU's Mountaineer Battalion earned the MacArthur Award in 2008 as the best overall battalion in the eastern region — the program's highest national recognition and evidence that the competitive drive runs deep here. The battalion moved to a new facility at Eagle Place on the Evansdale campus in 2019, upgraded from nearly four decades in Stansbury Hall, which gave cadets better training infrastructure. West Virginia's demographics mean the program draws heavily from rural Appalachian backgrounds, and the WV Army National Guard's 130th Engineer Brigade and 150th Armored Cavalry Regiment provide strong local Guard pathways for cadets who accept GRFD contracts. The program's location in Morgantown is not proximate to Active Duty installations, but the cadre have historically compensated with frequent off-campus training rotations. Insider knowledge worth having: WVU produces a disproportionate share of engineer and aviation officers relative to program size, partly because the engineering school is strong and partly because cadre actively counsel cadets toward branches where WV Guard has slots. Branch selection success depends heavily on early OML performance — start working your PT score and GPA from day one.
